In the manner of a travel log, in The Island of Fushía Irma del Águila gradually reveals an unlikely story and reconstructs the characters’ past and present. But primarily she outlines a setting—the jungle—whose vast potential imposes itself upon her. The academic and cultural parameters she brings with her will have to be redefined once she is confronted with the course of the jungle’s rivers, the knowledge of its natives, and the discovery of the identities of the women who perhaps once lived on the island that brought her to the Amazon in the first place.
