A central idea runs through Transfer: societies, like people, are known for their fears. So it never hurts to examine those fears from time to time. The shivers that run up our spines reveals us. Every time and place has its particular ghosts, but the figure of the person who decides to emigrate to another country seems to distill and trigger major contemporary fears. It is as if their movement had the strange quality of bringing out the worst in society.. Their vulnerability makes them easy prey to violence, racism or exclusion.
