«Rupay», in Quechua, is ardor, fire. This Rupay gathers stories of the political violence that devastated Peru for more than two decades.
On May 17th, 1980, the Shining Path started a fire by burning the electoral records in a small town in the Ayacucho region. Their objective was to light the flame of revolution, a «spark in the prairie» that would end up setting all of Peru aflame. This graphic novel deals with events relating to the start of the conflict, between 1980 and 1984: the first subversive acts, the government response, the escalation of the Shining Path’s violence, their implantation strategies, the response from the media and Peruvian intellectuals, and the brutality and impunity with which the repression was carried out.
